TRAFFIC LIGHT OPTIMIZATION USING MATLAB

Abstract : The increase in urbanization and traffic congestion creates an urgent need to operate our transportation systems with maximum efficiency. One of the most cost-effective measures for dealing with this problem is traffic signal control. Traffic Signal Control is a system for synchronizing the timing of any number of traffic signals in an area, with the aim of reducing stops and overall vehicle delay or maximizing throughput. It provides control, surveillance, and maintenance functions.
 EXISTING SYSTEM :
The Elimination Pairing System, one of tournament pairing systems, has been used to calculate optimum cycle length and green times. The EPS can be drawn as follows: EPS is useful because it optimizes the cycle length and green time together, where most software or methods calculates them separately.
 DISADVANTAGE :
Present Traffic Light Controllers are based on microcontrollers & microprocessors. These have limitations because it uses the pre-defined hardware, which is functioning according to the program that does not have the flexibility of modification on real time basis. Elimination Pairing System algorithm supports in optimizing cycle but it doesn’t consider the other vehicles.
 PROPOSED SYSTEM :
The method was developed utilizing input from camera and using soft computing approach to obtain information on traffic density, namely Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm.
 ADVANTAGE :
Optical flow approach was developed to obtain modification of an effective background; this method is based on detecting differences in light intensity. However, the changes of light due to weather or sunlight can decrease the effectiveness of this method. Moreover, this method is also inefficient in terms of computing.
